Getting REAL (Releasing Expectations And Living)

Sometimes I feel like my life is ruled by expectations: My own internal expectations for myself; my expectations of others; the expectations I perceive or believe others have for me; my perception of society's expectations, my parent's expectations, and my family's expectations; the expectations I've adopted or created internally and externally from all my years of living. Expectations, expectations, expectations.

Now, I know better than to let the Expectation Master be in charge, but it still happens sometimes. She is sneaky and tricky and just when I'm not looking (especially when I've been in a groove) she often sneaks in, and finds a way to start feeding me her lines. Sometimes it takes a day, or two, or ten before I even notice I'm carrying all the extra weight of her expectation baggage!

The expectation trap is one of my favorite ways to sabotage myself. It overwhelms me, keeps me in a story about what I can or cannot do, keeps me small, keeps my relationships challenged, and closes off my world to endless possibilities of the present moment (because, with an expectation, I'm either in the past and/or the future, but telling myself it's the present moment). It's exhausting. And I know I'm not alone in this. American society is built on expectations. Most everyone I know catches a ride on the expectation train from time to time.

So what happens when that expectation train comes to town? Well, for me, I give myself permission to get REAL (Release Expectations And Live). That means I do my best to let myself off the hook. I set down the overwhelming weight of all the "shoulds."I come back to the present moment and do my best to let go. To turn it over. To release it.

Don't get me wrong, my Expectation Master has gifts for me, she is important. Her light side encourages me to grow, expand and open to my full potential. So, whenever she's offering me something that is actually truly supportive of that, I keep it. Beyond that though, I do my best to set it down (I can always pick it up again later!)

What do you do when your expectation train comes to town? Are you riding it right now without even knowing it? It is it taking you where you want to be going? Remember, the option to get REAL is always available to you too! Happy expectation releasing!
